Science Behind: X-Rays

Have you ever gotten an X-Ray?

Well, if so, you have been exposed to radiation! But, for, like, a second – nothing that can really harm you. X-Rays use an energy source that is similar to light, but, due to their shorter wavelength, have the ability to pass through the human body. On an X-Ray, the lighter parts, the bones, are where photons of light have been stopped, and the darker parts, the rest of your body, is where the light has passed through.

Computer tomography is a type of X-Ray that passes you through a machine where hundreds of pictures are taken of slivers of your body at a time. These images are then stacked and you get a full body X-Ray.

So, next time you need an X-Ray just know it's all light.
